Note: A new version of this software suite, called simply 'ChemOffice Professional 17', is available on the software site. Use the instructions below only if you have a specific need for an older version.
Jul 18, 2020 ChemBioDraw 14.0 for Mac is free to download from our software library. The bundle identifier for this application is com.perkinelmer.ChemDraw. This application is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 or later. Our antivirus analysis shows that this Mac download is clean. The actual developer of this software for Mac is PerkinElmer.
Studies of Chemistry and Biology require searching for information using chemical structures, as well as drawing and presenting them in electronic and print media. The important thing to remember here is that the software is not licensed for commercial use. Lehigh’s license for ChemBioOffice with CambridgeSoft provides for its installation on personal machines (for students and faculty working at home), but the procedure is a little more involved, since it requires registration with PerkinElmer (CambridgeSoft’s parent company) and obtaining and installing one’s own license key for the software. Since the Mac version of the software uses a different licensing system than the Windows version, this same method must be used, whether they’re Lehigh machines or personal ones. Basically, users need to register with the software’s developer (PerkinElmer Informatics), download the software from their website, and activate it with their own unique serial number, which Perkin Elmer will send via email. This needs to be done annually, but the vendor does send out reminders to individual users, and the installation can be done anytime.
*A Quick Review of ChemBioDraw 13. This version of ChemBioDraw released in August 2012 is the first release since Cambridgesoft became part of Perkin-Elmer and there are a significant number of changes. This is the first version to be released since the introduction of Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8 and both are now officially supported.

*Install ChemDraw for Mac Before following the instructions below make sure you have registered a ChemDraw account Install and Activate ChemDraw. Click on the ChemBioDraw installer cdpf16.0.1.dmg in Downloads. Review and accept the licence agreement. Drag and Drop.
If you’ve never done so, register with PerkinElmer Informatics using your Lehigh email address.
Go to: http://www.cambridgesoft.com. On that page, click on the ‘Register’ link, fill in your info, and follow the prompts.
If you’re already registered, log in, by clicking on ‘Login’, and then click on ‘My Account’.
If you’re already logged in, just go to step 2.
Important: The license you will receive is keyed to your email address, and must be in the “lehigh.edu” domain, so be sure to register with your Lehigh email address.
Once Logged into PerkinElmer, navigate to the “Site Licensing” area.
a. Click on ‘My Account’, and then click on ‘My Site Subscription’
b. Then click on ‘Download Site Subscription Software’
Download the appropriate package. Generally, select the first link in the section for your OS -- they’re subtitled ‘Windows Download’ and ‘Macintosh Download’. The installer files are somewhat large, and might take some time to download depending on the speed of your network connection. (Continue to Step 4 below . . . !)
Check your Email, and Save your License Information. PerkinElmer Informatics will send a license key to the email address with which you registered. This is your personal code. Don’t share or lose it. Note that codes for both Mac and Windows versions are included. It’s wise to save this document somewhere you can find it if you need to re-install the software. It might be wise to store a hint there regarding your PerkinElmer site password (most will only use it once a year. . .).
Run the installer program: Find installation program you downloaded in step 3, and double-click to run it. For Windows, the installation program runs a wizard and allows for the addition of ChemScript, E-Notebook (Including SQL Lite 2005), MNova NMR Lite, Python, and Python Extensions for ChemFinder. For Macs, the program is a package with a folder inside, as shown. Just drag both program icons to the indicated folder shortcuts. (Continue to step 6 below . . . !)
License and activate the software: After the installation, Windows users will find ChemBioDraw in in their Start menu under ‘All Programs’ and Mac users will find it in their Applications folder. Again, double-click to run. When it runs for the first time, Windows may determine that an additional package is needed (.Net Framework). Simply let Windows download and install this package, restart your machine, and run ChemBioOffice again. The first time it starts up, ChemBioOffice (or ChemDraw on the Mac) will present a window requesting activation -- enter your name, email address and serial number as they appeared in the email you received. Then, click on ‘Activate over Internet’. Once activated, the software will finish starting, and take you to a blank document.

In the field of synthetic chemistry, there is nobody who doesn’t use ChemDraw or ChemBioDraw for preparing their chemical structures. It may be for the sake of simply preparing a calculated 1H NMR or 13C NMR spectrum or converting chemical structures to names and vice versa. Obviously, when writing a thesis or paper, you don’t want ti go wrong and have the general layout for your chemical structures match the international standards. As part of our D-CHAB department here at ETH Zurich and the Laboratory for Organic Chemistry, we have access to the most recent versions of useful software for our work. This includes ChemBioDraw and especially ChemBioDraw 14.0, for that matter.
However, when I wanted to install the update, I was unable to do so. Even though I acquired the serial number and registration code from Perkin Elmer, I ran into a specific problem that occurred after entering these credentials. As a result, right after hitting enter and specifying the default folder location, the application just closed. Upon reopening, I had to reenter the credentials just to find out, that the problem persisted. However, I found the solution for this validation problem (See below)!
First of all, let me tell you that I am running Mac OS X 10.9.4 at the time of this report. Further, I tried to install Perkin Elmer’s ChemBioDraw 14.0. I am not sure if all related software acts the same upon installation.
1) I still had ChemBioDraw 12 on my system. So the first thing you wanna do is delete that one by dragging it into the trash bin and emptying it. ChemBioDraw doesn’t coexist with other copies of the software on the same user account. Therefore, the old one must go. (Sorry, buddy).
2) In your next step, go to the Finder and then in the top menu bar, do the following: Click on Go > Go to Folder… . Then, enter “Users/Shared/Library” without the quotation marks and hit enter. This will take you to the shared folder of all users on this computer. When entering the credentials (registration code and serial), ChemBioDraw 14.0 needs to find a folder in “Users/Shared/Library” called “Preferences”. So if you do not have this folder there, just go ahead and create it.
3) As soon as this is done (folder has been made and old ChemBioDraw is deleted), you can go ahead and set up ChemBioDraw 14.0. Notice, that after entering serial number and registration code, it will directly open the software for you and you can start to work. At the same time, Perkin Elmer’s ChemBioDraw will have put a certain file into the folder “Preferences” which we have just made. This new file “com.cambridgesoft.plist” contains information such as your default file path you specified, your registration and serial numbers, your user name, organisation, expiration date (interesting…), and more.Install Chembiodraw For Mac Os
Extra Tip: On the first startup of the software, your Mac will usually tell you that it won’t open the application, because it is from an “unknown developer”. In order to still open it, just right-click on the application and choose “Open” from the context menu. Afterwards, your Mac will trust this application.Install Chembiodraw For Mac Pro
Let me know if this solution to this ChemBioDraw 14.0 installation problem worked for you, as well!
